Happy Halloween

OK-so i'm a day late. We had a power surge (as did my sis) around 5pm or so and computer wasn't back up until this afternoon. (yea gary!)
I had planned to post a story i jotted down yesterday at work (slow day) so here it goes-better late than never:

The house was perfect-maybe bungalow was a better word-just enough room for Abigail and her dog Jack. The surrounding woods were awash in autumnal color-reds, yellows, oranges and a touch of brown. The air was crisp and October was here. Abby knew she had moved in just in time-cooler weather but no snow yet. She had arranged to have the inside of the house painted prior to her move to freshen it up-and cover a scratched area in the living room. It looked like an animal had gotten in while the house was vacant and tried to get at something in the wall. She still had boxes to unpack, but Jack needed to go out for his walk and she wanted to explore the woods. She said the word "walk" and he was at the door waiting for his leash. He was sniffing everything he could while she enjoyed the atmosphere. The crunching of leaves, the colors, the smell of autumn. She could hear geese honking in the distance-it was then she fell over something. She got up, dusted the leaves off and that is when she saw it. The lone tombstone.
It simply read "Laura." What in the world was that doing here-in the woods-not a cemetery. Who was Laura? Maybe she could do some research in town. It was then she noticed it was starting to get dark and she really didn't want to be lost out here after dark. She and Jack headed back. She felt relief once they reached the porch. She fed Jack and started her own dinner. Once that was cleaned up she took a long bath, got out her book and sat by the fire she had started and read. She couldn't keep her eyes open very long-it had been a tiring day, so she went on to bed.
2a.m. Something woke Abby up. She heard a noise. She couldn't quite make it out, but it seemed to come from the direction of the living room. She was so tired, she soon fell back asleep and forgot about it.
After several weeks, she and Jack fell into a comfortable routine. Jack would go out for a romp in the woods in the mornings while Abby got ready for her day. They would both head for her studio in town. When they got home, daylight permitting, they would go for a walk, then have dinner.
By this time, Abby had touched up the paint in the living room a few times. She knew she was going to have to call the painter and have him put some type of sealer on it. She would do that on monday-it was friday-and Halloween; no need to bother him tonight. All day long she had seen kids in town in their costumes-pirates, ghosts, witches and a few she couldn't identify. All the businesses had handed out candy to them to jump start their Trick-or-Treating. She and Jack had their dinner, then sat by the fire she had started. She treated herself to the cookies she had bought at the local bakery. She fell asleep by the fire, perfectly content in this new life.
2 a.m. A noise woke her from her sleep. The fire had died out to embers. The noise seemed to come from behind her. She turned to look-it seemed there was someone there in the shadows! Scratching. at the wall in a frenzied manner. Abby screamed, then passed out from fright.
The next morning she checked the wall. She knocked on the paneling-it seemed hollow around that area. She ran and got her tool kit-tried to pry the boards loose. A section came loose-the back of the paneling had scratches too. It seemed to cover a little closet. She got her flashlight-saw something on the ground right at the entry-it was a locket. It read "Laura."

A Visit to the Cemetery

Gary and I ventured north mon since we were both off and had lunch at Fishmonger's. (where we hadn't been in yrs) then went to a cemetery in dallas (greenwood) so i could take some pictures. These are just a few. The first is unusual-had never seen one like this. It was a child and has clothes draped over-you can even see shoes and a hat. The second has the bird and flowers-the third is another bird. I'll post more later this week.

Ft Worth Nature Center

Gary and i went to the Nature Center in ft worth. Here are a few photo's of the place. There are bison, prairie dogs, wildlife and several different land areas. (plains, wetlands etc...) the bobcat was one in captivity (a family pet) that was given up. His claws had been removed, so he is caged. the final picture is a frog-look closely-biggest damn frog i've ever seen!

Quick Update

Wanted to update w/pictures, but gary changed something and i can't upload til he shows me what he did. so i'll just publish a non-photo post.
I learned some new spanish words this week. Nely teaches me ones when i ask. I learned that calzone in spanish is "underwear" and penne-as in penne pasta is a word for the male anatomy. To show my grasp of the words, i used them in a sentence... "Keep your penne out of my calzone"
Yes, it got a laugh at work.
Maybe tomorrow evening i will update with pictures.

Nearing Oct

A faint touch of coolness is in the air...could october be near?
I've been nursing an excruciating headache for the last 3 days-hoping it will subside soon.
I did take the time to get out one halloween tablecloth-and the peanut m& m's... more soon.

This Week (ie nothing much)

Didn't do any art so far this week. The dogs got into a fight w/Mia-my fault-she got cut up pretty bad and had to go to the vet. She got staples in her head & neck (I guess stiches are passe) She will be fine but was scary.
Thurs was the 7th anniv of Sept 11. I thought about it on several occasions throughout the week but don't think it hit me until driving home from work-seeing flags at half mast. Gave me chills.
I leave with a picture of jack and riley. Riley climbed into the couch cushion that they tore up and i sewed shut-to no avail. anyway, here he is inside the cushion playing with jack...

Last Week in Pictures

Here is what i was up to last week-after managing to jam my finger at work...the yellow piece has a glass background. The pieces are the broken pieces i found when visiting greg. The boy/girl i did one night while playing with background colors. The little "film" girl i just had the idea for and did it... hopefully, i'll be inspired this week to make something too!

20 Years

This past wkend we went to Houston and Huntsville just to hang out. We went to our favorite chinese restaurant-twice. Went to alot of antique stores, ate, swam, napped and just hung out with no dogs or "kid." Tues we celebrated our 20th anniversary. I think we (along with friends and family) are still shocked we made it. Sometimes it seems like yesterday and others it seems like a lifetime ago. We've been through some things that tested us-but here we are, and here's to the next 20!

The Cowgirl

Finished the box last night. I think she might need a moon hanging on the left side, but other than that, here is the finished product!

The Burned Box continued

Here is where i am at on the box now. I screwed in a piece of rusted metal on the back instead of doing a wooded back. This was some kind of flattened can-about the shape of a hershey's choc container-but flat. I cut it apart and opened it-tore the bottom part off and added to the box.
I then cut barbed wire to fit and attached to the front. On top, i added some rusted old bedsprings. More tomorrow if i get the next part done.

Cut, Sand, Paint, Burn and Nail

Yes in that order-my next project inspired by my rust-gathering in Evant! The idea came to me on the drive home of a box i wanted to do-one that had a burned, old barn wood look.
I cut the wood, then painted w/latex paint. After that sat for a day, i got out my torch and spent about an hour (in 2 sessions) burning the wood/paint before nailing it together and torching it some more. I'm going to add some fluid acrylic color to it before sealing it. There will be a cowgirl image inside, along w/some rusted metal piece in the back-maybe as the back and barbed wire to finish it off~ will post more as i progress.

Meanwhile, Back at the Ranch...

Thurs i drove to Evant TX to visit my friend Greg. He manages a 1300 acre ranch and i finally had a chance to go down there. This is the main gate.
I continued onto the property only to arrive at the guest house. Needless to say, i had to wonder what i had gotten myself in to.

We got my stuff settled in-then we went on a tour of the ranch. Saw jackrabbits, cottontails, blackbuck (antelope)deer, prize deer, wild turkeys, livestock-including one bull who did NOT want to share the road with us. Walked around a dry creekbed, scavenged near old homesteads for rusty metal objects and broken (or whole) bottles, pottery etc... There is even a hideout on the property dating back to the 1800's-two brothers-the bailey boys-hid out there for 6 yrs before getting careless, being found and later hanged.
Got to have an ionic foot bath in town-and eat at local eateries, including the town diner. Where all the ranchers come for breakfast and gossip. Had a great time-interesting to see all there was there-all the "secrets" that land can hold. No telling how many have lived there throughout the years. Headed home on fri afternoon-looking forward to a visit when the weather is cooler~and THIS is the real guesthouse.

V A C A T I O N

I've been on vacation this week, staying up late to watch movies. Sleeping in~here it is past noon and i'm still in my jammies. Decided to update blogs i like to visit-i had a ton of ones i had saved and not added. I still have more, but for now, it's enough. Time to do something productive. Like get dressed and play in the art room. No house work for today~at least not yet. Margo came over yesterday and i showed her
how to make a wooden box to embellish/decorate. All we did was the construction. I did get started on mine last night-pictures soon~

Art Retreat Wkend

My art group had a retreat this wkend. It was hosted in the home of Patti-one of our members-We arrived at various time on sat-Our first project was a byzantine bracelet made of copper-I actually finished mine and must say it's wonderful-thanks to Dale for teaching it. We then had lunch and afterwards, Babette did a great demo on PMC. If it weren't for the expense, i think that could be really addictive to play with-endless possibilities! I did a demo/class on paint mixing-which i wasn't greatly ready for. After the past month, i'm a bit out of the groove and forgot a few things.
Traci showed us how to make a pin cushion ring-a quick easy project that will come in handy. Sally taught us the "long tall sally" book that she originated. We got to a stopping point and went to Pei Wei for dinner. You know my take on chinese food, but i found something i could tolerate~ :) We came back to finish our books-with or without the envelopes. Margo made it around 11pm... We stayed up late and talked and laughed~ and slept soundly after a day of friends and art.
Sun morning found us around the dining table eating and laughing. Won't even go into what that conversation was like-just suffice it to say it was "girl talk!" Our first project of the day was some metal embossing that Donna G taught us. We made metal houses-a fun, relaxing technique. Traci S showed us how to do a "poppet puppet." These were really fun and have alot of possibilities. I made an Addison puppet. We took time out for a brief meeting-we installed our new queen-Carol and you can see how serious the job is! April showed us a wonderful butterfly/paint project where we made some really ethereal looking butterflies (ones she found at goodwill) The day wound down-i showed a few how to use their jewely saw to cut out wood-that was the end of the play~
We helped clean up a bit before some of us had to leave. When i left, several were relaxing in the pool in the 105 temps. I needed to get home for a family obligation, but next time-i'll be in the pool too!
food for wkend-$25
supplies for wkend-$37
playing w/art friends-priceless!

A Few Images from Missouri

I've been home a week now and still don't have much energy. Sitting with someone while they are dying is draining-emotionally and physically-more than i ever thought it could be. I slept good last night-first time in over a month.
The pictures are 2nd cousins and a great aunt. Fireworks on the deck, my family
and more family on the deck~cousin and aunt and my immediates...it was at least good to see those we hadn't seen in yrs-and those we had only heard of but never met-

Hard Two Weeks

On father's day eve we got a call that my gram was gravely ill and not expected to make it. In march, she fell down the stairs of her deck-didn't break a bone! but was bruised and went to the hosp and a nursing home for rehab. She went home and was better-as well as one can be at that age. She later fell in her kitchen and broke her hip. She had surgery for that and developed pneumonia. Not a good combination at age 89 along w/her Parkinson's.
We all rushed up there on mon-praying to make it-and we did. I wasn't prepared for how she looked-hard to see such a spunky person that frail. She was moved to a nursing home on tues for hospice. We had some good days with her. She recognized us and talked to us best she could. By the following sun, she wasn't so well. That was the last day she really spoke at all. She can't swallow now-her vitals are up and down-I spent two wks there before heading home (another story) and hope to go back for the long wkend. as she is still hanging in there. In the meantime, we've gotten to know the staff-they are angels. Some of the residents there are real characters! I just pray that she's not in any pain at this point-and that she can at least hear us.

Home for the Lost and Abandoned

I think that is what we'll call our house now. We have dog #5. 6 actually since we
found a home for dog 5. This one dug his way into the yard. We have done everything we could to find his owner as he was obviously a loved dog until he got out or was abandoned. We are now trying to find him a home-so if you are looking for a little dog who is house-trained, affectionate and in need of a home, give us a call! I'm calling him "Pete-y"

The Birthday Wkend

Sat gary and i went to breakfast-mmmm, french toast and bacon. I went out to ft worth to hunt for treasure. Found a few things, but nothing exciting. It was way too hot to be out. Got home and did some art-made something for the art mtg sun, but forgot to take a picture of them. I watched "Monster House" and "Narnia the Lion, the witch and the wardrobe" since i hadn't seen them. Sun i went to my art mtg. We made the cutest bird nest things. Afterwards, i went to dinner with April, Carol, Traci, & Traci at Maggiano's for my birthday-we were stuffed afterwards! Watched "Once" tonight. Mon-'the' day, gary and i went to eat at Rockfish-then started to go to the movie, but way too crowded. We went to barnes & noble and 1/2 price books. I ordered some things from amazon. We had dinner tonight with my parents (red, hot & blue)
On tues we saw "Ironman" after work-it was great~ hope there is a sequel. When i got home on thurs, gary surprized me with a cake! that he made. Sure looks good~
