I hope you are all safe and finding things to occupy your time if you aren't working. If you are, I hope you get some fun downtime too.

I was scanning some of my photo's and ephemera this wkend so thought i would share a freebie for you to print out and use in art (personal use)
You should be able to click on, then print. (should being the operative word)
As a test, I've downloaded this image for your own use. (not to sell) I just ask that you leave a comment if you print it out letting me know if it worked or not-i'm still learning.
If I decide to put collage sheets in my etsy site, they will be full pages, not just partially filled like this one.

i usually download to flash drive and print at kinko's
We'll see how that goes.
my current obsession is making 'zines so thought i would post a few here. Still working on "the great purge" in my art room. really hope to get that done this year! (didn't say month) :)
A collage 'zine with no real theme. The second one is my "party" zine. fun colors and happy pictures. donna joyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06477398621641972642noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-26119451.post-37339281137004253552017-07-03T20:16:00.001-05:002017-07-03T20:16:35.745-05:00Where does the Time Go?I'm pretty sure i started a post or two, then never published them. I've been working on getting my art room cleaned. Trying to find a spot for everything and purge some things. The purging is not going as well as i had hoped. It is hard to give some things up. I have several boxes of stuff to donate and there are probably things i could sell as well. I'll work on that after i finish with the "clean."
I do post art on Instagram when i actually do something. Guess i should put it on here too. I hate to give up the blog totally but fear that day is coming. Not that it has a lot of readers-esp when the posting has slacked off so much.

Maybe if I set the goal to blog once a month for now, i'll actually
do it. I post on instagram and forget to blog. I hosted the project
for my art groups' january meeting. I also showed a picture on IG to a
friend. Told her i saw it the night before and wanted to change the
project to that :) She texted me later that night and said why don't
we co-host this next month. So i agreed. Thinking we would come up
with our own versions and it would not be too difficult. Wrong. Our
Inspiration was Tina Jensen. I saw a book she posted on IG and wanted to try my hand at something similar. Jeanne and I didn't like how loose our
books
were when we just tied them to the hinge, so we came up with other
bindings. Took us weeks to make our samples, figure out 2 bindings
(thanks Traci for the accordian idea!) You can see pictures on my IG feed~but i will post some here too.
I hosted my art group's meeting last month and we did postcards. sounds boring. :) But they are a lot of fun. They were based on some I saw that Roxanne Coble (by bun) did on Make it Artsy. Mine are a bit more involved and full of color-not just on one side.
I really like the mark-making/doodling part. I usually have some on hand ready to add all the lines and such when i go to visit my parents. Everything fits in a nice box and travels well. I can sit at the table and
play without having to bring a lot of stuff with me.

Now i am working on some door hinge books~will post some pictures soon! donna joyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06477398621641972642noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-26119451.post-27326930721253893942017-01-12T13:17:00.000-06:002017-01-12T13:17:03.870-06:00Happy New Year and OrganizeI can still say that since it's only the 12th.
I got on the "word" bandwagon again this year. I've been feeling chaotic at home ever since we cleaned out my grandparents' house and my parents moved. I brought things home that were for other family members, myself or to sell or donate. Some of it went where it was supposed to, some was sold or given away-the rest resides with me. A lot of the "stuff" was brought home that i thought i could use for art-things that no one else would have wanted...ie trash. I go through boxes, move things around, stack it in the garage, leave it on a table...you get the picture. I've finally had enough. Another friend and I decided that we would be accountable to each other this year as far as getting our art spaces organized. I realized in order to do that i had to first clean off the dining table and the kitchen table. Both had things that needed to go to new homes or be put where they belong. (read: art projects) I now have 3 boxes-over 50 lbs of photo's that need to go to St Louis. but they are boxed/divided for family and ready to go. Old books have been sold to the book store (what a rip off but got them out of the house) Sewing stuff has been moved back to the art room and kitchen table is almost clean. I've even started on my art room table. If you haven't guessed, my word this year is ORGANIZE.

I am actually making progress so it feels really good and do-able. I'm in that "purge" mode so i am more willing to let some things go. (at least in my head) It's time to put things in their place so that i can be more creative and not just stare at my mess.donna joyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06477398621641972642noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-26119451.post-74120913043942121362016-12-29T17:04:00.000-06:002016-12-29T17:04:31.374-06:00Christmas 2016
This was one of the most "un-Christmas-y" years i've ever had. I barely decorated-no tree or ladder. Did up up lights/greenery around front door~Just never felt like Christmas this yr. I think a combination of warm weather, parents not here and no real Christmas spirit. The casino party "circuit" didn't even put me in the mood. I got sick in Dec-just like last year. Did good to get christmas gifts done/wrapped etc...
We weren't all even spending the holiday together. Nathan and I both drove out to mom and dad's (separately) so they wouldn't be alone in new house for christmas.
First time ever i didn't spend christmas with gary. At least mom's house was decorated-amazing since she has been taking care of dad and spending a lot of time at hospital when he was there.
This bell was made by my grandmother when i was in the 4th grade. She made one for each grandchild with their school photo from that year.
I said, except for Nathan being there, this was like christmas 1963. (my first) Mom said they had no money that year. Dad's paycheck went for gas to/from work and their living expenses. grandma gave her green stamps (or the orange kind) and that is what she used to shop. I got an insulated plate and few other essentials. The grandparents gave me gifts. :)
Had a getaway with a friend this weekend. We left fri and headed to E Texas.

stopped at The Pink Pistol. Took our pictures on her throne.

Made our way up to Mineola -good amount of antique stores. Grabbed a bit of lunch then went on to

Gladewater (antique capitol of texas-or so they say) :) Due to the time, we knew we wouldn't get to see it all but we hit a few stores. Arrived in Gilmer around 6. Gave her the house tour, unpacked the car then had dinner-my mom had roast and the fixings for us. and pie. can't go wrong with pie. Visited with them.

Hung out upstairs a bit before turning in.

Sat-after breakfast we headed into Marshall to go to the the Weisman.

Historic building-former dept store. It looks like something you would see in a b & w movie. Opened in 1900 and you can just imagine the history.

We then made our way up to Jefferson. Antique and gift shops. Just walked around town and went in where we felt like looking. Grabbed late lunch, hit one more store then headed to the cemetery.

Sunday we visited with my dad-mom was at church. Said goodbye's when she got home.

I just didn't have it in me this year to really do any decorating around the house. I have a few things out-some that stay up all year, but that's about it. I do have my new bats out though. We made these at our sept art meeting. They are about 6" tall and adorable. It's tradition to make a "stuffie" every year now. (designed by Traci Hutton of Art-T-Dolls )(She has dolls and fluffy stuffies in her shop.)
I picked her up from school one day and in our conversation, we talked about the kid at school who won the halloween costume contest last year at their trunk or treat. She wanted to copy his idea. I said you can't copy what he did, we have to come up with something else. (he was a claw machine) the box gave me the idea to do a fortune teller box like the old machines. Think "Big" (the movie) So i showed her some pictures online and we sketched out a plan on paper. There was a trunk or treat last wkend at her neighbor's church so we gave it a test run. The box is black w/the white diamonds. The diamonds don't totally cover the box-wanted it to look old and worn. I got a $2 purple sheet at the dollar store-used it for the inside-looks better than just painting it. I attached battery-operated lights around the window. (hard to see in picture-they are orange) Made a crystal ball out of a plastic christmas ball ornament. Painted it with neon yellow, lime green and glitter. Added a glow stick to the inside when it got dark so that it glows. I made her some fortune cards to hand out too-they were a big hit.
I cut a hole where people could drop her candy into-there is a bag attached inside for it to fall into. Made a little sign ".25 or candy" Wanted it to look like the machines where you would put your money in to get your fortune-but don't want people to give money-hence "candy"~ She will be decked out in gypsy-paraphernalia next weekend. My sister and i may dress as gypsy's too since we're walking with her. The box has holes cut in sides so that she can pick it up and carry it from car to car. I'll post more after the weekend. It's been kind of a secret-she wants to win the costume contest :)
Half Price Books had their annual dallas clearance sale this wkend-so we went over friday afternoon.
This time nothing was over $2-i guess they made it easier on themselves. They used to group the books very specifically which i'm sure took forever to set up. Now it's more 'general' so you have to dig. The digging is part of the fun.
I looked at an aisle of "art" then headed back to the vintage table. Well worth the look. After several hours and looking at all the books we could stand, Gary left with 3. Me-18. Like i need more books. I tell myself when i go to antique malls, estate sales, flea markets-no books. I don't listen to myself very often.

Here are the 18 that i brought home. some i wanted for the covers-to use in projects and some for my halloween/children's book collection.
On Saturday, we headed out to Canton Tx for Trade Days. I haven't been out there in 1 1/2 yrs. The weather was nice-got a little warm at times but mostly pleasant. We were looking for "parts" to use to make some light fixtures. Gary wants to try his hand at making some-probably to sell. Some of the rusty things you see in the picture will go towards those projects. I picked up a few things for myself too~that's what canton is for :) In the middle of the picture you can see 2 little rectangles (didn't photograph well)
they are miniature photo's that came from england. I had never seen any this small before so i had to have them. They aren't great photo's-very faded but still very cool.

Walking by a booth i noticed some stacks of books. If you have never been to Canton, this is not unusual to see a pile of books in various booths. I don't always stop to look but I felt compelled to look here. I looked at a few and as i started to walk away a man told me they were .50 each. Well, for that price, i HAD to look. Glad I did. I found 5 vintage books I figured I could use in art projects-either the covers and/or the pages. The geography book was just plain cool. (more on that in a bit) I took my 5 to the other guy and he said i could have them all for 2.00. Score!
Gary and I don't always look at the same pace so sometimes I wander ahead-I found a few things when we weren't together. He wanted to see what I found. He doesn't know that you buy during the day~then you show and tell afterwards. Told him we would look at it all when we got home.
When we got home is when i noticed the geography book was printed in St Louis, Mo. (my second home) so that made it more special to me. Then i opened it up to see the copyright date. We figured early 1900's. Those pages were missing so I looked at one of the maps-1895. Then i found school papers done by the girl that had the book Zula . 2 other books of my 5 had her name written in them too. (the cover with stripes and the physics book. That was where i found her last 9th grade report card promoting her to the 10th grade. another score~ and a letter to her grandmother was in the geography book.
In the last year I had checked out a book by Sarah Ahearn Bellemare from my library at least twice. I ended up buying a copy for myself. Meanwhile...a friend had a copy of Somerset Workshop that had an article on Sarah's technique. (she did some art with her own spin on it) which then inspired me to do some too. I still want to try one that has more the look Sarah gets but in the meantime, i'm having fun.
FISH-
I used a vintage photo of my mom as a little girl. My grandfather loved to fish-pretty sure he took her to land this one. Blew up my photo and made a transfer. The background was inspired by something i saw on pinterest by Joan Fullerton who does beautiful work. I went for the drippy look more than texture since I was adding my transfer and not transferring onto my substrate.
This one is done on plywood.
The girl with pink is done on a little canvas board. She still needed something-a friend suggested she needed to be layered on another piece-so that is what she will get. (this photo is taken on the backside of the FISH (the plywood was an unfisnished project-but the side i never finished looked good with the canvas so i'll make something along those lines color wise.
Did this piece on a wooden house I got at michael's this summer.
It's about 6" tall. Transfer image is one i found on pinterest~went with a halloween theme. (below is picture of the sides/top of the house) painted stripes then gave it a charcoal wash to age it. Still may do more to the sides (vintage text circles) or not.
So that is what i've been up to when i can fit time in for art~
(SuziQu's Threadworks)
I have long admired her work and since I love fabric and book making, wanted to see her process.
So now I am putting together my version of a book in her style. I decided to start I would make a smaler book than what she did in her videos. Suzi is from Australia so the measurments/paper size is different but you can easily figure it out via google :)

I still have some things I want to add after I do the initial fabric work and will post those when it's done.
Meanwhile, here are a few pages that are in progress
Gary and I decided to take a road trip to Waco on friday. I had wanted
to see Magnolia, but was holding out for the bakery to open first.
(gotta have priorities) Once we parked -(the baptist church across st
has $10 parking) Magnolia has a free lot. There is street parking and
other parking if you look for it. I noticed there was a line out the
door of the bakery-and down the sidewalk. We went to Magnolia first.
If you watch Fixer Upper then you'll recognize Joanna's style the minute
you walk in the door. The staging is really wonderful and there are
many employees around should you need any help. When you walk through
the store there are a set of steps on the far side-these go in to a
"lower level" but it's not air-conditioned. Big door is open and fans
are going but it's still warm with crowds and summer heat.

The grounds are wonderful-the large play area with balls, black and white bean bag looking things to sit on. Wooden swings, wooden bench swings, covered areas to sit. Food trucks on site. The garden store with the gardens outside (including little fairy gardens) It's wonderful to see her vision come to light.
(again-if you watch the show, you saw this from the beginning)
I didn't take pictures of everything-you can see it on their website.
Besided, Maverick (see picture in sidebar) ate my phone thurs night-so I didn't take as many photo's as i might have.
The bakery was wonderful. The decor is black and white, antiques/vintage store look-with a modern update. The cupcakes were fabulous (nuts and bolts for me) We didn't try any of the other items but it all looked great. Worth the trip-hope to go again in the fall when it's cooler.
Drove by Clint Harp's store and home.
His nephew played soccer with nathan in high school.
After that, we headed to another part of town and hit some antique stores.
I have made some progress on my art room
but I'm not where I want it to be yet. (meaning no pictures yet)
Hot water heater died which is forcing us to clean out the garage-something we said we needed to do a year ago. At least it is finally getting done. I'm going to work on some projects that I put out there and just
"forgot" about. My mom saved our baby bed-so when they moved I kept it with the intention of making something for each of us to hang. (rail sides and each end piece) I get one of each since I am the one doing the work :) Got them cleaned up today so I can actually work on them.
I also re-discovered some of my dead animal bones and my bundle. (disintegration)
So here are pictures I took. This one stayed outside well over a year-maybe closer to two.
I've said it before, started, put it off, ignored the room. We've all done it. Got shelf with fabric mostly organized. Working on my table now. At times i want to shove it all in a box and throw it away-probably wouldn't miss half of it.
Then i find something i forgot i had and it's like Christmas all over...
March 1 was the official move in date.
All those months of being their own contractor have finally paid off. My sister, niece, her nephew and I drove out there march 16th to help with unpacking. (and again on march 25) I'll have to post more pictures once all the unpacking is done and stuff hung on walls. every picture I have has boxes in it.
Here are a few-in progress. Some estate sale finds-fabric, lace and buttons helped motivate me to get back to this ~ I intended to finish some i had started years ago-but ended up making new ones. I also intended to make mini's. These are turning more into "mediums."

50th Birthday Bundle Book

This year I have several friends and family members that have milestone birthdays. 50th and 60th.
Today, my brother in law turns 60. 10 days ago, a friend turned 50. Said friend has a you tube
channel where she entertains thousands on a regular basis. She also
shares ideas, tips, tricks and her nostrils. She has had me as a guest
in her home on several occasions throughout the years.
So, for Shannon's birthday I decided that i needed to make her something special. You only turn 50 once.
I had taken an online class (see this
post) in May and knew that this would be the perfect thing for her
birthday-a keepsake of sorts. This "book" is made up of pockets-so she
could keep cards or memento's in it. I first started making a fairly
colorful one-in her favorite colors but didn't like the way it was
coming along
so i scrapped that and decided 50 deserved to be
black. Since I didn't want to rub it in her face too badly, i went with
an elegant look: black, white and metallic. I wanted a fairly large
size so the pockets would be big.
Once I finished the book, i
set it aside and patiently waited for Jan to get here. I also enlisted
the help of her fellow facebook moderators to spread the word-If you
wanted to make a birthday card for shannon, you could do so and send to
me to include in the book. I knew that doing it so early AND before the
holidays could prove detrimental. If people procrastinate, as artists
do, then they would forget over the holiday season. People came
through-and I had enough cards to put in all the book pockets.
I
decided I couldn't just send the book-it was a birthday after all.
Things are tight in their home right now as Jayson is looking for work.
(this is known so i'm not divulging family secrets) So...I wanted to add
a bit of "fun" to the box. Brownie mix (easier than a cake) candles,
balloons, horns, twizzlers and some other little goodies.
The
box went off in the mail and for once, the PO actually delivered it in
priority mail time. (usually it's just a "guideline." Imagine my
surprise to find out she was afraid to open it. Seems she thought i had
sent her
another doll. Like i would do that. (ok, maybe i would,
but i did promise after the last doll incident, there would be no more)
i just shot myself in the foot with that comment but i did promise.
Don't want her to have a heart attack after all. Then 20,000+ people
would hate me for sure. She finally braved the box-saw that it was
legit. (as in no doll) and filmed the opening. You can see that here if you haven't.
So here are pictures of said book bundle...
Well, I see i have neglected the blog again. Can't believe that it is February already. I had big plans for january: getting back on my treadmill, getting my art room in order (HA) getting the house cleaned up from
all art stuff that should be in said art room...Not done yet. I hope to check it all off my list by the end of this month. I have been hooked on making my fabric ribbon-and getting my Etsy store back up. I had some
people ask about the ribbon and others that said "you should sell this" so i thought i would give it a try.
I've already made one roll for someone so I had a sale before I even got store ready! Hopefully it will be set up by friday~that's my goal anyway.
My parents' house is almost done~finally. They think they will be in it by March. Drive way has been poured and all the bits and pieces of finishing are pretty much done. I think they have to have a final inspection then they have the OK to move in... They went through Owner/Builder where you are the contractor-so they did one step at a time and were there every day when the workers were doing their thing. I got to see it last summer when it was just studs-so of course we signed several boards. My dad wrote under the stairwell the story of the house-date started and names...Guess i'll take another road trip in March to see the finished product. I know they will be glad to get out of their tiny apartment-they won't know what to do with all the space.
I guess another goal should be updating my blog a bit more. I do have another post planned after something else happens-a certain present has to be opened before i can put pictures on here ;)

I spent most of December sick-first mild food poisoning, then a stomach virus that knocked me out, then a respiratory "thing." I work for a casino party company and Dec. is the busy month. I was lucky enough that the stomach thing happened after the first busy wkend. The respiratory/head crap-not so much. I could barely talk one wkend. Made it kind of hard to deal blackjack and joke around but i managed. The most unusual party this year was my last one. It was held at a daycare. (for the employees) There were only 3 of us working. I was in the toddler room. Roulette wheel and abc's...
I was also hosting Christmas Eve again this year. For 13. I decided to do spaghetti again-it's easy and everyone liked it last year. I also decided (in between 5 million trips to grocery stores/errands/shopping) that i needed to move furniture around so we could fit two tables in the living room and all sit together.
I found "chalkboard" table clothes at walmart. I made mini menu's for each place. I did my seating "cards" with my vintage anagrams/scrabble tiles. Chalk on the tables, Christmas dishes-candles-you get the picture.
I hope so because i forgot to take a single picture. It was down to the wire getting it all ready in time and when the first person showed up, I totally forget to get a shot before everyone got here. Oh well. Food was good, played a movie trivia game (i had the cards on the tables) and opened gifts. The nephews and niece played blackjack. Addie (8) won. :)
I shoved a bunch of stuff into my art room so the house would be in order. Now comes the time that I must head into said room and start back on the task of getting it in order so that i can actually create in there again. I stopped doing anything in there when i got hooked on my sewing. So my goal will now be to put the room in order for real this time.
I started thinking back on the year and what art i have done. I realized that I did no journaling, no mixed media that i can think of-it was just sewing. I also worked on the room a bit-moving stuff around a lot. This year i want to do better. I still have sewing projects i want to do. I want to get back to my art journal. I really wish i could concentrate on one real medium...fabric/sewing/books are where i lean right now. Maybe that is what i will concentrate on in the new year. I also signed up for some online classes that I need to finish or even watch. No more until those get my attention.
So here is hoping for a more artful year for me-and anyone else who is so inclined.
Happy New Year!
After taking an online class where we made a fabric scrap tie to close the book and seeing /making paper ribbon with scraps, i'm now obsessed with making "fabric ribbon."
Part of my "use up what you have" mentality. I'll admit i have bought a few new fabrics/tulle to match what
I have when I don't feel there is enough variety. What can i say? Fabric is addicting. I've been playing with fabric one way or another since i was 5 or 6. My mom used to work for Stretch & Sew, World of Fabrics and taught sewing. I can remember in the early 70's-the "make your own lingerie" fad came about. The local paper wrote an article about my mom-"Mrs Moody" (never once did they use her name.) I can remember some women coming to our house (maybe for a class) and i was messing with some scraps making a flower. (gathered fab) My mom would make them for house shoes. I remember hearing one of the ladies ask my mom if I knew what I was doing. (I think she thought i was just messing around "copying" they actions of my mom.) She told them "yes she does." So there.
Back to now~I can't seem to stop making my ribbon. I recently used a piece to wrap a baby shower gift-it got passed around the room because some people wanted to look at it more closely. I made it so that it could be hung as garland after used for wrapping. Below you'll see a sampling of some of the rolls~
